A wave of optimism has swept through Sagamu following the successful conduct of the Lafarge–RIDSCo bursary examination, a key initiative designed to support indigent students and promote access to higher education within the community.
The program, facilitated by the Royal Initiative for Development of Sagamu Community in partnership with Lafarge Africa Plc, reflects a shared commitment to investing in human capital and strengthening educational development in Ogun State.
Held on Saturday, October 12, the bursary examination attracted a large turnout of applicants—comprising indigenes and residents of Sagamu currently enrolled in tertiary institutions across the state. Participants sat for the competitive test with high hopes of securing financial support to ease the rising cost of education.
The initiative, now an anticipated annual intervention, is specifically tailored to address the academic and financial needs of Sagamu youths. By targeting students in higher institutions, the program seeks to empower a new generation of leaders equipped with the knowledge and skills required to drive socio-economic growth within the region.
Speaking on the significance of the initiative, RIDSCo’s Chairman on Education, Mr. Adekunle Bello, emphasized the transformative role of education in community development.
“Our collaboration with Lafarge is built on a shared vision that education remains the most powerful tool for sustainable growth. We are determined to ensure that no deserving student from Sagamu is denied opportunities due to financial limitations,” he said.
Lafarge’s participation aligns with its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) strategy, which prioritizes community development and educational support in host communities. The company has consistently invested in initiatives that uplift local populations, and this partnership further reinforces its commitment to Sagamu.
Also lending his voice, Sagamu Youth Association’s Special Duty officer, Comrade Bashiru Hammed Adewale (Hon. Prince Lahbash), described the initiative as a strategic investment in the future of the community.
“This program is not just about financial aid—it is about shaping the future. By supporting these students today, we are nurturing tomorrow’s leaders who will give back and sustain the growth of Sagamu,” he noted.
The examination marks the first phase of a rigorous selection process. Candidates who perform exceptionally well will be shortlisted, with final beneficiaries determined based on both academic merit and financial need. Successful applicants will receive bursary support covering tuition fees, books, and other essential academic expenses.
For many participants, the opportunity represents a crucial lifeline. A student of Olabisi Onabanjo University expressed gratitude, noting that the rising cost of education has placed immense pressure on families.
“This bursary gives me hope. It has been difficult keeping up with school fees, and I am optimistic about being selected,” the student said.
With the shortlisting process now underway, anticipation continues to build across the community as students await the announcement of successful candidates.
Beyond individual beneficiaries, stakeholders believe the initiative will create a ripple effect—strengthening educational attainment, reducing financial barriers, and ultimately contributing to the long-term development of Sagamu.
The Lafarge–RIDSCo bursary scheme stands as a strong example of how strategic partnerships can address pressing societal challenges, offering not just financial relief, but renewed hope and opportunity for the youth.
